how to build a sitemap file using notepad
This article shows you step by step how to build a sitemap.xml file using notepad. Sitemap.xml files are loaded to your website's root directory and are then registered with the Google and Yahoo-Bing search engines so that your site can be found, crawled and your webpages indexed by the search engines, thus permitting your online content to be found organically by them.
First, open up the "Notebook" application on your computer and save it as sitemap.xml.
Next, enter the following starting code for the file to initiate it for reading by a search engine:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
You are now ready to enter the individual webpages on your website that you want the search engine crawlers/spiders to see. Pages are entered as follows:
Above you see the first two pages loaded into a sitemap.xml file. Just create as many of these in your file as you need to to capture all your site's visible pages. You can use the current date and time for the <lastmod> date to set up the record.
To end the file when done, just enter: </urlset> to close out the initial file tag at the top of the file. Save the file and you are done. Your next step is to upload this file to the root directory (usually where most of your online webpages are) of your website and then you submit this information to the Google and Yahoo-Bing search search engines.
